Delve into the World of Betting: Crafting Game Designs for Keeping Players Engaged (Part 1)

The iGaming sector has witnessed significant growth, and developers are increasingly focusing on strategies to maintain player engagement and encourage long-term loyalty. Effective game design plays a vital role in these efforts, with inventive mechanics, rewarding features, and tailored experiences all contributing to improved retention rates. One question that continues to challenge developers is uncovering what makes a game truly "sticky." They are striving to balance innovation with player preferences (Timmins, 2024).

In a discussion with Talk Gambling's Ross Timmins, executives from several leading studios explored the role game design plays in increasing player retention and how the industry is adapting to evolving player expectations.

Eamonn Beardsley, Content Strategy Director at Light & Wonder, underscored the importance of constant innovation in the industry and emphasized the need for originality without forsaking familiarity. The team at Light & Wonder relies heavily on data to identify popular features that keep players engaged (Beardsley, 2024).

Norbert Grono, Account Manager at Wazdan, additionally highlighted the crucial role of innovative game mechanics in sustaining player engagement by introducing fresh features that maintain enjoyable gameplay over extended sessions. Balanced implementation of novel mechanics and familiar elements ensures the game remains captivating (Grono, 2024).

Andy Huang, CEO of TaDa Gaming, discussed the significance of innovative game mechanics in maintaining engagement. Incorporating elements such as challenges, strategic decision-making, and high win potential helps drive player interest. TaDa utilizes techniques such as the unique TriLuckβ„’ feature, Lock & Respin mechanic, and WIN CARD feature to enhance the overall user experience (Huang, 2024).

Mike Collins, Game Product Owner at Thunderkick, discussed the importance of striking the optimal balance between feature novelty and familiarity for broad appeal and maximizing a title's potential reach. Thunderkick emphasizes features that boost entertainment value and provide real-win potential (Collins, 2024).

Kendoo's Head of Commercial, Kate Romanenko, acknowledged that familiar mechanics, personalized features, or eye-catching graphics can create a compelling player experience without necessarily being overly innovative. By investing in thorough testing, R&D efforts, and data analysis, Kendoo focuses on delivering high-quality content (Romanenko, 2024).

Toni Karapetrov, Head of Corporate Communications at Habanero, shared insights on the importance of data-driven decisions in choosing which features to focus on. Their team examines player engagement, retention, and behavior to build games that maintain long-term interest (Karapetrov, 2024).

Habanero's Head of Sales, Angela Leitner, emphasized the role of frequent updates and new releases in maintaining player engagement. By continuously improving and evolving their game library, studios can keep viewers coming back for more (Leitner, 2024).

In pursuit of developing "sticky" games, developers face the challenge of predicting which titles will resonate with players. While analyzing player data, market trends, and gathering feedback help guide development decisions, the process remains unpredictable (Timmins, 2024).

Game developers examine player behavior, conduct usability tests, and implement feedback loops to refine their games. Successful sticky games rely on factors such as behavioral feedback loops, gamification elements, a well-designed user interface, and targeted content to create engaging experiences that motivate players to return (Enrichment Data, 2024).

Beyond the core gameplay features, data analysis, and player feedback, developers must also focus on continuous testing, user-centered design, and regular content updates to ensure player engagement is sustained (Enrichment Data, 2024).

Part 2 of this discussion, focusing on further strategies for developing player-retaining games, will be published on March 31, 2024 (Timmins, 2024).
